Your initial consultation will take approximately 1 hour. The following describes what you can expect.

  1. Detailed medical case history
  2. Full examination
  3. Explanation of diagnosis and prognosis including treatment plan and objectives.
  4. Treatment
  5. Rehabilitation program.

Case History:

Your medical case history including discussion about your current pain, exercise levels, past incidents such as falls/operations etc will be taken at this time. If you have the results of any tests such as MRI or X-rays then please bring them along but don't worry if you don't have them.

Examination:

You will be taken through a detailed musculo-skeletal examination at this time, your joint movements will be assessed and further examination including blood pressure assessment, orthopaedic and neurological examinations will be carried out depending on your pain. Your osteopath will use a highly-developed sense of touch to assess areas of restriction, tension, and injuries .

During examination and treatment from an osteopath you will normally be asked to remove some of your outer clothing. Please wear underwear, shorts or sports bra that you feel comfortable in.

Diagnosis:

Once your osteopath has arrived to a diagnosis it will be explained to you including it's prognosis, it's implications and the treatment plan will be discussed with you.

Treatment:

If there is sufficient time after the examination then treatment may be given at the initial consultation depending on diagnosis and suitability for treatment. Treatment will be composed of a combination of deep tissue massage work, fascial unwinding, muscle stretching, joint mobilisation and joint manipulations when appropriate and with consent.

Rehabilitation program:

Most injuries require a rehabilitation program composed primarily of exercises and stretches and this will be prescribed at this time. Any exercises given will be demonstrated fully and practiced at this point. The exercises will be tailored to you and you will not be given any exercises you can not do.
